Rocks and Soil and what they can tell you
By knowing how to interpret the geology on your property, the make up of your soil and therefore the minerals potentially available to your plants and animals becomes apparent. The phrase "potentially available" is not used by accident, as many soils contain sufficient of a particular element to ensure good crop and pasture growth, but the bioavailability, and hence the uptake of that mineral has been reduced by a combination of conventional faming practices such as overuse of artificial fertilizers and poor soil microbiology.
The geology within a large property may be very different from one area to another and the quality of the soil affected as a consequence.
An understanding of the geology can also give one an indication of the likely potential for underground water which could be accessed via a bore.
